We welcomed Holly Melear to the program to talk about STEAMSPACE.  For lots more information, please visit their website, https://steam-space.org.  Don't forget to register when you visit the home page if both eligible and interested in their Cities in Space 2023 program.  We started our discussion with Holly by having her introduce us to STEAMSPACE.  We asked her why she thought a need existed to create such an organization plus I wanted to know her interests that brought her to STEAMSPACE in 2015.  We spent a good part of the early discussion talking with our guest about these basic questions.  From there, it was an easy transition to talking about the STEAMSPACE kids, the programs, contents, mentors, judges, teachers and the global outreach for the organization.

Some of the topics we discussed in the context of STEAMSPACE included space settlement and what the students did and do around that topic as they have papers and research projects.  Do note what our guest said about the projects, papers and the students interest in settlement including the possibility of one day living on a space settlement.  You might be surprised by the student thinking on the subject.  Listener Todd as about the teachers and their space knowledge or interests, plus the structure of the contest and participating teams. Let us know your thoughts on this program, the students, contests, projects, teachers and more by posting on our blog for this show.  Since most of what Holly was talking about took place in Austin, TX, home of STEAMSPACE, listener Paul as if there were plans to hold programming in other cities, even other places around the world as the students coming to the programs are from all over.

Space challenges were a significant part of our discussion.  We highlighted sustainability challenges.  Also highlighted was the student networking and the creation of bonds between the students, plus the emergency of strong leadership.  Holly spent some time talking with us about the leadership issue so don't miss what she said.  Dr. Bell sent in a note about engineering, architecture, design and more.  Holly was asked about NASA, a focus on Mars and the Moon plus commercial activities.  Fremont John called to asked about the role of college students in the program plus mentor training.  He also brought the term Filking when he asked if there was any type of social programming for the group such as filking. Before closing, Holly talked about the 2023 programming and the upcoming Cities in Space 2023 Design Competition. If interested, check it out on their home page and register.

Please post all questions/comments for Holly Melear on our blog for this program. Holly can be reached through me or her website.
