We welcomed Tyler Ryan Bender to the program for a 62 minute discussion on The Beyond Earth Institute and their upcoming main event conference in October of this year, "The Beyond Earth Symposium  Crafting the Policies that Will Enable Humanity's Future in Space."  As we started the discussion, Tyler briefly introduced himself through his bid for the U.S. Congress.  We talked with Tyler about using space as a campaign issue.  Don't miss his commentary on that point.  In addition, space visions were talked about along with the billionaires in space.  Tyle also stressed the need for the U.S. to remain the top and very strong space leader of the world.  In fact that topic came up a few times during this segment.

Turning to the Beyond Earth Institute, Tyler talked about his role as a policy analyst, the founders and teams which you can see on their home page above, the focus o the organization and the funding behind it.  One thing he said was that the Institute was space leadership in the same light as we know US maritime leadership to be and they want to work toward achieving that goal.  He suggested work was needed.  In addition, the Artemis program mentioned, actually discussed in detail.  So was cislunar development and early on Tyler was asked to give a time line for living off Earth which he suggested could be anytime from the 2030s to 100 years from now.

Fremont John was our first caller about cislunar science and technology.  This brought up several articles by Dennis Wingo re his blog posts and op-ed articles.  Tyler then mentioned their focus on the Artemis Base Camp.  This proved to be quite a discussion.  After the call, Tyler started talking about their upcoming October Symposium which you can access per the above link.  As for the Symposium, it will be a hybrid with both virtual and in person attendance.  Tyler detailed the Symposium topics, the four pillars of the symposium and the speakers for us, all of which you can see on the Symposium website.

Listner Bob in Dallas by emails asked Tyler if their organization had any focus on Mars.  Tyler was clear that the Moon was the focus but said "everything is on the table."  Dr. Doug joined the conversation by asking about Starship and SLS.  As part of the commentary Tyler said that Starship can speed up the timeline.  Listen to what he said about SLS.  Costs and economics were part of the Dr. Doug discussion.  The possibility of people paying SpaceX for lunar transportation was talked about. So was marketing business to business.  Before ending, Tyler was asked if the Institute did any lobbying for policy.  The response was a quick no.

Please post your comments/questions for Tyler on our blog for this show.  You can reach him through me or the Beyond Earth Institute.
