We welcomed Ryan Reynolds back for a special discussion, requiring lots and lots of listener participation regarding the reality, the plausibility, the dream like nature and the vision for both space solar power and settlement.  Ryan started with SSP, gradually move to settlement, then as we were nearing the end of the discussion, SSP and space settlement merged together as if you could not do one without the other.  Starting with space solar power, Ryan talked about the vision from his perspective, the need for lots more education with kids and the public, plus he talked about most people not seeing the "trap" in the SSP discussion.  While I asked Ryan to tell us what the trap was, before he did do that, see if you can figure it out from his commentary.  Let us know with blog posts. Adding to the SSP discussion was Ryan's insertion of O'Neill orbiting space stations or the O'Neill vision.  Listen to what he had say and see if you can  answer the rhetorical questions asked by our guest.  We also talked about SSP and other space selling points, including the classic I like to mention on the shows, "this will save the world" or "save humanity" or something like that.  Since one might have gotten the impression that Ryan was a bit of a skeptic about SSP, Fremont John  sent in an email to remind us all of the commercial company by John Bucknell working to achieve commercial SSP in the near future, Virtus Solis Technologies.  I believe John is making good progress with his business plan and look forward to an update from him later this year.  Before moving off the SSP topic, nuclear power was discussed, fusion was brought up later, and Marshall called in suggesting a mini proof of concept project to show the validity of it all.  Marshall had more to offer so listen to the rest of his call.  Since Ryan earlier referred to his needing to be tickled by this or that in space and my stopping the discussion to have Ryan define for us being tickled, i.e. what did it mean, Marshal suggested a 15% ROI would tickle lots of people and investors.  Marshall and Ryan carried on a few more minutes about close quarters in space, smells and odors.

Next up, space settlement.  Our guest talked about the ISS as an international model but started out by asking what lessons were there for extending our presence in space.  Ryan talked quite a bit about a virtual extension but was clear to say he was not talking about virtual reality.  Be sure to listen carefully to this part of the discussion and to hear what he said was missing but necessary.  Ft. Worth John called in about an SSP prototype and scaling the problems. He also talked agriculture in space and more.  The need for space jobs came up and several suggested that both SSP and settlement would require humans working space for the buildout.  They talked manufacturing and factories in space.  Ryan talked about meeting challenges head on, lowering sights, and dealing with other people to bring them along.  As for the public, the discussion went to education and more education.  The need to involve people in the process, not just talk about it passively.  With people needed in space along with the AI and robots, people would see a new path for both the in space economy and our terrestrial economy.  Freemont John called in about space settlement in their lifetime plus this is when fusion hit the big time in our discussion.  As we were approaching the end and Ryan was talking about tickling the public for interest in settlement, Rick Kwan sent in a note through the blog with a suggested film.  Since his comment is on the blog, it available to everyone.  In addition, since I have been delayed in posting this summary, I see some blog users have already started discussing the film suggested by Rick.  Thank you Rick for that suggestion.

Please share your dream vs. reality vision of SSP and settlement by posting on our blog.  Ryan will be responding to blog posts so keep the conversation going.  We may do another of these programs in the future with a co-host. Don't miss what was said about that idea near the end of this program.  Continue to post your comments/questions on our blog. You can reach Ryan Reynolds through the blog or me.
