We welcomed Dr. Daniel Tompkins back to the show for updates on space settlements that would be independent of Earth, have unlimited population and power, food supplies and more. Daniel also reported on his GrowMars program he presented when he was a guest on the program last year.  Please visit Daniel's website for more information at https://sites.google.com/view/growmars/home.  In addition, please use the Tags as a guide to all the topics and issues discussed on this program as the tags will serve as a good guideline to this discussion.  For your convenience the Tags are repeated below:

Tags:  Dr. Daniel Tompkins, Grow Mars, expanding loop technology, LEO demonstration, ISS National Lap and private space statins, bioplastics, radiation degradation resistance, successful space settlement characteristics, Moon/Mars compared to Earth with mammalian life, habitats, greenhouses, facts about temperature, Lunar Garden demonstration, Lockheed Martin, Space Settlement technology level, basic research and exploration, ISRU, combining settlement technologies, space settlement sustainability, pregnancy, birth, children on settlements, human gestation in space, bioplastics for beyond Mars, petroleum derived plastics, polycarbonates, Agile PEF, biodiesel, commercial bio products, bioregenerative, O2 levels and toxicity, algae, greenhouse sizes, lunar greenhouse compared to Martian greenhouse, power source, testing on the Moon vs. Mars vs. Earth, Space Lense Phase 1, Mars CO2 for plant growth, SpaceX and sustainable city on Mars, centrifuge studies with rodents, Mars commodity will be exporting IP, unlimited power, unlimited biology, terrariums, development and testing timelines.

Daniel spent quite a bit of time discussing sustainable space settlements for the Moon and Mars.  Part of this discussion included details on plant biology, bioplastics over plastics derived from petroleum, greenhouse specs and requirements for each, human gestation for a settlement, radiation issues and more. As you listen to his presentation, note the specifics and details as Daniel was quite thorough on these topics and what it might take to have sustainable settlements. When I asked if we were ready and capable of establishing sustainable settlements, he said not yet but listen to his explanation and details.  While he focused on his proposed expanding loop technology, he was much broader in his analysis and suggested settlement requirements.

Daniel was asked about the GrowMars demo he mentioned on the show last year. He said that did not happen, suggesting financial and economic reasons plus investors not having big visions over seeking big returns.  Please post your comments on what our guest said about the GrowMars program and investors and let us know what you think.  Daniel went on to describe in more or less a brief way the program he is working on with Lockheed Martin, the Lunar Garden demonstration.  He did not offer us much information at this time but told us he would soon have a website up including illustrations.  I asked him to let us know when that site was up and running.

Later in the show Daniel got an email asking why it was so important to have space settlements. Many guests are being asked this or a similar question.  Listen for his reply as it may surprise you.  Once you hear, feel free to post your comments about it on the blog.

This was a detailed and comprehensive discussion on some of the requirements for establishing lunar and Martian space settlements. In addition, he addressed the same for free space settlements though that was not his program focus.

Please post your comments/questions for Daniel on our blog for this program.  You can reach Daniel through me or his website listed above in this summary.
