John Batchelor and I welcomed both Dr. Ed Garnero and Dr. Qian Yuan from Arizona State and Cal Tech to discuss their newly published paper in the journal Nature titled, "Moon-forming impactor as a source of Erath's basal mantle anomalies." During this two segment Hotel Mars program, we talked about the leading theory regarding the Moon's origin regarding a Mars size rock hitting the Earth. This rock (asteroid) has been named Theia. Through the use of supercomputers and advanced seismology, it is now thought that parts of Theia are included in the lower layer of Earth's mantle, also on the Moon. Our guest explained this theory, the new findings and the supporting explanations for their conclusion. We talked about the mass percentages of Earth and the Moon which accounts for the Theia impact material. We also talked about earlier theories on the Moon's creation and why they have fallen of favor to the Theia theory. We talked about seismology, the need for astronauts to be on the Moon and looking in specific places for possible Theia rocks. Note that when Ed was asked if there was conclusive proof that Theia existed at one time, the answer was no but he put forth a strong scientific case based on advanced seismology which he detailed for us. You will find our guests most interesting as you will both segments of this Hotel Mars program.
Please post your comments/questions for our guests on our blog page. If you want to reach our guests, you can do so through me or their respective university faculty pages. You can read the abstract of their paper at www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023006589-1. Science News has a detailed article about their findings and their paper titled "Rock from the impact that formed the moon may linger in Earth's mantle. The article which you can find online was penned by Sid Perkins.
