We welcomed Dr. John Brandenburg (Dr. B) back to the show to take on critics of his own analysis and conclusions regarding the Dr. Loeb expedition findings. I started the show by asking Dr. B about his and others with national security classification and their citing "classified" when explaining certain things that may have happened with Mars. I suggested that once a security classification is used, it shuts others out. I took my time asking John this question because some on TSS blog have asserted that he does this plus in a few of the academic critiques of Dr. Loeb's work, hiding behind a security classification was cited by those skeptical of the Loeb findings and conclusions to date. I believe this part of the discussion continued for about 30 minutes. John made it clear he was always and even now using Open-Source information from Wikipedia plus other such sources. He said some of the hydrogen bomb physics has gone public such as R Process physics because it’s the same for a super nova and that is well discussed in open literature. He also said the same physics software for determining R process with a super nova is the same for the hydrogen bomb. John gave multiple examples of his use of open source plus he talked about the care and attention he has given to the subject to not invoke his security clearances from the past which by the way are still in effect for him. He did offer multiple apologies for confusing others or creating a misunderstanding but over and over again he said all of his work including his nuclear bomb theory on Mars, his earlier work on The Face on Mars and his analysis of the Loeb findings, were based on the open literature and not on anything still tightly held as classified. You might want to comment on this part of our discussion. I hope you do so post away on our blog for this show.
For the next part of our discussion, we focused on John's analysis of the Loeb expedition findings plus the critics of both Loeb and John's findings. He mentioned a few of the critics, Dr. Monica Grady in the UK plus Dr. Steve Desch at Arizona State. John explained why in his opinion their analysis was incorrect and why what he was suggesting was accurate. I suggest you listen carefully to John's detailed explanations and rebuttals. Of course you will decide on these issues for yourself which is the way it should be. Dr. B will respond to blog questions or emails, especially if people are civil and not throwing names or flames at him or those that have a different scientific opinion. I put the link to the Dr. Grady Marshall Island quote on the blog and John posted one of the charts and graphs used by Dr. Grady on our blog. John spent considerable time with detail explaining where in his opinion based on the facts the critics have it wrong about Loeb's work.
Other topics talked about included interstellar speeds, IM2 Portugal, his sci-fi books and the new one in the works, "Letters of Mark." Dr. B even got a listener question asking him if he regretted his early championing of the Face on Mars. John not only did not regret that work but told us he updated his work with two new articles that have been uploaded to this blog. Before the show ended he was asked for his view on human Mars settlement. Briefly, he said that Mars settlement was essential for the human race but listen to all of what he said in response to Jean's question. Before signing off, Dr. B provided us with a brief summary and conclusion.
