John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. David Grinspoon to this single segment Hotel Mars program. David announced that he had taken on a new position, this time with NASA as the Senior Scientist for Astrobiology Strategy. David spent time talking about NASA astrobiology, his new position and what he will be working on. He was asked about planning an actual life detection mission which opened the door to his discussion about the challenges in detecting life, especially if it is strange life to us. Don't miss his comments on this. He also talked about finding extremophiles such as we have on Earth and the importance of them to the finding of habitable life off Earth. Near the end of the segment while again talking about finding habitable life and life detection, he put for his three options for such a search. Don't miss them but for hint, the need for detectability by our instrumentation and science was at the top of the list.
