We welcomed Dr. Jewell back to the program as she was first a guest on Sept. 23, 2018 ( see www.thespaceshow.com/show/24-sep-2018/broadcast-3192-dr.-susan-jewell). During Susan's first appearance, she talked about the then Mars Academy and her future plans to grow her project into a much expanded program. Her new program which is the subject of this Space Show interview reflects the success Susan had in meeting her goals back in 2018. I suggest you listen to the 2018 program, then her new interview so you can hear for yourself what Susan has accomplished over the past 5 years. Do note that MMAARS is an entrepreneural startup, something Susan mentioned several times during the interview.

One of the things about this discussion that I got very early on in talking with Susan was the incredible job of organizing and developing the new program described on the website, what she offers to clients and what we talked about today. The MMAARS is a very complete program going from low fidelity to advanced fidelity (levels), all of which Susan described on air but they are also described in more detail on her website. I was struck by how many different missions were available ranging from a solo mission to crews with maybe as many as ten members. The use of real scientific experiments on these missions was also useful. The location, the Mojave Desert was a good choice. Years ago, my first cousin was a B-47 pilot in SAC. I recall his telling me about being dropped off in the Mojave Desert for survival training. He described how rough it was for them for several days but also how useful it was for them, not just as a bomber pilot but in general life. I am also aware of many self-improvement workshops that conclude with a sort of self-reflection and survival training in the same area. While I have not personally been to where Susan's group conducts their missions, I know the area well and it's an asset for such mission training.
Another thing that struck me was the list of questions Susan threw out early in the show about humans being able to live in space. For example, Susan said there would be no permanent living in space without solving problems such as being able to do surgery in space, dealing with life threatening injuries or illness, without the need of getting supplies or help from Earth which may be far away regarding travel time. She talked about how her missions were responding to these and other needs in the training the mission participants received. This discussion was early in the program so don't miss it. In addition, Susan went on to talk about the use of tools, developing tools, even knowing what tools such as those that might be genetic, DNA, and such. This was midway through the discussion. Regarding the two segments I mentioned, Susan included comments about how her missions actually taught the participants to deal with these problems in the context of the analog mission. For example, they were taught some medical such as suturing and other skills.
Later in the program Susan talked about each specific level, the people that were entering the program and follow up with students after graduation. While we did not talk about the cost or financing of the missions, the cost for each level is listed on the website. They do appear costly to me, even were one wanting to finance the cost given our higher interest rates. Interested parties should talk about their interest and capabilities with Susan but I think this sort program review would be deficient if I did not talk about mission costs.
As we were ending the program, I asked our guest for a clarification regarding the use of the initials MTP as I was not hearing it correctly. Susan did explain MTP to us so I will leave it to you to listen to the conclusion of the show where she explained it.
