We welcomed Dr. Deniz Civay to the program to discuss her company, GlobalFoundries, and the making of semiconductor chips for terrestrial and space use. This was an amazing very wide-ranging technology discussion that even including the idea of back engineering technology from the future (the Roswell UFO story was brought up) with an example of people in 1940 being able to back engineer a high-level chip sent back to 1940 via a time machine. Our guest was asked if she thought it could be done. I will let you ponder her response as you listen to the interview because this question which came from a phone call near the end of the program with Ft. Worth John turned out to be most interesting with a detailed guest response that would make anyone think more than twice about back engineering anything that might be so advanced a chip from the future or alien tech.
As requested with other programs, use the tags to get a general view and understanding of the subject and the topics we discussed with Dr. Civay. For your convenience, I've repeated the tags below. I've also used this summary to highlight a few (not all) of the topics that I truly enjoyed hearing and learning about because in the end, Deniz was a super semiconductor/chip professor for The Space Show audience.

Our discussion actually started with an introduction to GlobalFoundries (GF), the chip manufacturing global industry with my addition of chip commentary from the Next Big Future about Musk and Diamandis talking about longevity expanding soon. The article went on to talk about chip advancements and identified several chips and who made them. I asked our guest to help us understand what was being said about the chips plus I wanted to know if these terrestrial AI chips were the same as chips being used for space applications. Deniz had much to say on this subject including talking about how the chips are made, designed programmed, customized for use, application and purpose, often by the buyer or user of the chip. She used many cell phone examples which is why she got the iPhone question later in the show asking why satellites are so dependable and the questioners iPhone has so many stability issues. I think you will the response by Deniz to be a bit frustrating but plausible given the phone manufacturer goes for compromises and tradeoffs due to cost while the satellite folks go for reliability and durability. A listeners asked many questions about chips differences and purposes.
Besides the nuts and bolts of designing, modifying, customizing and creating a chip for special purposes like national security, medical applications, deep space and more, Deniz had much to say about space in general as a harsh environment. For example, later in the show Fremont John called and one of his questions was if she thought chips might be made off-Earth someday, citing some rhetoric on this subject by a few companies. Listen to her answer and what she said about the process, the tools needed to make the chips, all what is involved in chip production. The short answer was not likely, but the possibility might be there for some aspects of chip manufacturing to be done in space. She did not know what the benefits if any would be for chip manufacturing in microgravity but said there might be benefits. Given all the hardware needed to make chips and design them, moving all of this off-Earth would be challenging but then again, maybe there will future changes in the way chips are produced so time will tell. Speaking of space, our guest was asked about chips for settlement and if the technology timeline for making such chips and even knowing what to design and make would coincide with the timeline for our being able to go and live in a space settlement. Don't miss her response to that question.
I liked my question toward the end of the show about chip espionage. I assumed bad actors had some sort of at least basic chip manufacturing capability, so I asked her what the parts were of an advanced chip that were priorities for theft and if cybersecurity was a big part of their operation and capability. My question was not specifically addressed but our guest came close in her response. Again, listen and post your opinion about this on the blog.
This was a full Space Show program chocked full of good information. Don't miss any part of it. Please post your comments/questions on our blog for this show. You can reach our guest through me here at The Space Show.
