We welcomed both Dr. Angie Bukley and Dr. Ken Davidian back to the program to discuss their new ISU North American fast introduction space class, the Space Sector Crash Course. Our guests started out by talking about the need to rapidly get new people coming into the space industry up to date for better performance at the International Space University along with those entering the aerospace job market. The class designed by Angie and Ken does just that in that it's like a concentrated Cliff Notes comprehensive course focusing on space development, commercial space and NewSpace. The course includes physical sciences, life sciences, policy, business, satellites, and space humanities. It includes an overview of past, present and future using three days plus seven hours of lecture each day. Later in our discussion our guests told us has the agenda was evolving for the next version of the class to be offered. Note that the class is in person only but that a virtual type of class is being developed for a later date.
We fielded several listener emails with questions about who teaches the classes, how do you get to be a class teacher, will the course be held in different cities (that sparked a big response with listeners suggesting this or that city. I plugged Las Vegas to the nth degree!). A few listeners were interested to see if the course was available for high school students interested in the topic while a few teachers sent us a note wanting to know if they could get continuing education credits for taking the class. As you will, that is in the works but not available at this time.
While pitching the class which was only for ISU N. America, our guests talked about ISU in general which is located in Strasbourg, France. Also talked about were the ISU famous summer sessions. Don't miss what was said about the upcoming summer program 2024. Having been to one in Florida and another at NASA Ames, I can tell you that they are life changing if you engage in the space industry. I still have great contacts from my summer sessions, and I still draw upon ISU grads for Space Show programming.
There were a few questions about the crash course focusing on NewSpace. Our guests told us that they would likely carve NewSpace out of general discussion and give it its own segment. They also said they would likely combine past and present for a larger focus on the future. As you will hear, the Crash Course is a work in progress.
