John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. David Grinspoon to discuss comets, including Haley's comet with a return scheduled for 2061-62. Our guest described comets, their regular orbital period, compared them to asteroids and then talked about Avi Loeb and his work. Avi's work has been focused on fast moving interstellar objects including our first such visitor, Oumuamua. Dr. Grinspoon talked about the interstellar velocity, ideas and proposals to intercept such a fast moving interstellar objects for study and the fact that we might discover more such objects as the new Vera Rubin observatory comes on line. Comet mythology was discussed as well as being prepared to study the next one as soon as it is detected rather than finding it when it is almost out of our solar system.
