We welcomed Jim Lewis of the Cocoa Beach, FL space coast back to the show to tell us about his having seen the first ever Vulcan launch with the two Celestis missions onboard, one for the Moon and one going to deep space. Jim described the Vulcan launch, he compared it to other large rocket launches he has both seen and heard, plus he talked about the Celestis memorial services for those souls headed into space. He had very high praise for both Vulcan and Celestis.
Jim had a friend on the Celestis mission to deep space, Martin Caidin. Most of the rest of our program was about Martin, his inspiration, his writings, the books he wrote, his science fiction, interest in developing space, and his being a true visionary for the future and the fact that he liked to do things with shock value for those seeing him. Here, I refer to one of Jim's Martin Caidin stories about coming to his high school career day. You will hear the story near the end of today's program.
Listeners recognized Caidin's work from his books like Cyborg and the one that inspired the Six Million Dollar Man and later Woman, plus movies such as Marooned. Jim talked about Martin's background, including his education. Despite his being a visionary and understanding the vital need for humans to live off Earth, he was not a scientist. Near the end of the program, I asked Jim if he saw any modern-day visionaries coming along in development on the order of Martin Caidin. He did and he named a few. Listen to hear the list.
