Our first caller for this Open Lines program was Dr. Doug Plata regarding his analysis of tonnage that can be carried BELO in a Starship regarding lunar or other habitats. Dr. Doug has posted his analysis on the blog regarding specialty habs for space. Not only did Doug talk about Starship capacity but we discussed inflatables, the work done by Bigelow Aerospace plus we briefly talked about the unfortunate demise of Bigelow Aerospace. Note that I will be offering up the Bob Bigelow interview for the Golden Oldie program on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, as there will not be a live show for that evening.
Ft. Worth John called to talk about Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick’s Scientific American Article on his conclusions as of leaving AARO. Here is the article should you want to read it:

He also mentioned remarks made on the subject by Sen. Rubio which seem different from the narrative. We took a call from a new listener, Ryan in Oregon, about an article he read by a science student in Iceland who posted a paper titled "Potential Perturbation of the Ionosphere by Mega constellations and Corresponding Artificial Re-entry Plasma Dust" by Sierra Solter-Hunt. The author's hypothesis is that with thousands of satellites reentering Earth's atmosphere, plasma and more will damage Earth's atmosphere. The paper has been posted to the blog thanks to Michael Listner. Ryan also sent us a review of the article which can be found at SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids. I told Ryan I would get a few high quality opinions on the paper so please comment on it and post your comments on the blog. Should I get a review from others that I send it to I will post the info on the blog.
The Saturday New Your Times from Feb. 3, 2024 posted a front page article titled "Could a Giant Parasol in Outer Space Help solve the Climate Crisis." The article is behind a paywall so I cannot put it up on the blog but you can search for it via the title. Fremont John called in to dismiss it and so did I. I read from one or two of the paragraphs regarding the size of the parasol plus some other specs per the NYT article. If you have thoughts on this, please share them with us.
We took a few calls including one from Dr. Lurio about standing being given to an environmental like group trying to block Starship launches from Boca Chica. Actually, more than focusing on the environment, the issue in the new round of litigation has to do with SpaceX closing off part of the beach while under Texas law beaches are to remain open to the public. Michael Listner called in to talk about this as did Dr. Lurio. Check the blog for more information but also this is an easy search so if you want more, you should be able to find it. The question as to this causing delays in the Starship demo flight schedule are for now up in the air. It is an unfolding story but the potential seems there to further delay of Starship.
